How Being a Health Care Clinic Volunteer Changed My Life

3 Signs That A Da Vinci Hysterectomy Might Be Your Best Choice

by Brett Mills

If you are in need of a hysterectomy -- such as if you have cancer or another medical issue -- then you might be scared about the idea of having such a serious procedure done. However, you should know that hysterectomies are very common; in fact, after the C-section, the hysterectomy is the second most common female-specific surgical procedure in the world, affecting about 500,000 women each year.

This doesn't mean that it isn't a serious surgical procedure, but you should know that there are minimally-invasive options. For example, the Da Vinci hysterectomy uses robotic technology and just one surgical entry site. These are a few signs that this might be the best type of hysterectomy for you.

1. You Don't Like Taking Pain Medication

Many people don't like taking pain medication because they are afraid of the risk of addiction or because their bodies don't react well to these medications. Luckily, with a Da Vinci hysterectomy, the need for pain medication is reduced, and you may just need an over-the-counter option. You might even find that you don't need to take any pain medication at all.

2. You're Self-conscious About Scars

Unlike other hysterectomies, the Da Vinci procedure only requires one tiny incision. This is because your doctor does not have to use his or her hands to perform the procedure; instead, it is performed by tiny robotic tools. If you are self-conscious about scars and would like to minimize scarring as much as possible, the Da Vinci procedure might be your best option.

3. You Can't Take Time Off of Work

If you're like many people, you simply don't have the opportunity to take a lot of time off of work. If you need to get back to your regular activities as soon as possible, Da Vinci surgery is probably a better option. After this procedure, you should be able to resume many of your normal activities, like driving, as soon as the next day after the procedure. You may need to spend about a week resting as much as possible, but you may be able to return to work, as long as heavy lifting isn't required. Every woman is different, however, so it's important to talk to your doctor about potential healing times.

As you can see, there are a few reasons why a Da Vinci hysterectomy might be the best choice for you. Before making this decision, however, you need to sit down with your doctor to learn more about this procedure and your other options.
